Berrynarbour and North Devon
This
pretty village nestles at the foot of the beautiful Sterridge
Valley. It is off the coast road between Coombe Martin (2 miles) and
Ilfracombe (4 miles) and so misses most of the holiday traffic.
It has won several "Best Kept Village" awards.
The 16th centuary "Olde Globe" in the village
centre provides pub grub and restaurant meals, has a skittle alley and
a pool table, and welcomes children and dogs. There are other Pubs and
restaurants within easy distance as well as "Miss Muffet"
for cream teas and evening meals.
The village post office/shop/off licence sells newspapers and groceries.
Berrynarbor
is surrounded by spectacular countryside and is close to some of the
most dramatic and varied scenery in England. At Woolacombe (about 7
miles) there are three miles of blue flag golden sands with lots of
smaller coves and beaches even nearer.
The coastal path from Minehead to Lands End is within one mile, and
offers exciting cliff top walks or beautiful short strolls from convenient
car parks.
Away from the coast are the wilds of Exmoor, with
red deer, hidden valleys and charming villages. There is excellent walking
on many marked tracks and horse riding is readily available.
If
you enjoy stately homes and gardens, Arlington Court, Chambercombe Manor,
Marwood Gardens and the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Rosemoor
(Torrington) are within easy reach.
Ilfracombe has an indoor swimming pool, golf, riding stables and fishing
trips from the harbour. There are also regular trips to Lundy Island
from there.
Bideford
and Barnstable have their famous pannier markets 3 times a week. Barnstaple
also has a brand new shopping centre (Sainsburys and Tesco are just
out of town) and good leisure centre.
Lynton and Lynmouth with the water driven cliff railway are to the east
and the beautiful and unusual fishing village of Clovelly is to the
west.
